Lynsey Kenogo has been taking her online, sophomore-level courses with Oaks Christian Online High School for the past year. She found the Oaks Christian main campus website online in 2011 while living in Rwanda.
After emailing with the Director of International Students, she decided to complete college-preparatory courses through Oaks Christian Online before attempting to travel to the United States. During that time, Lynsey moved to Uganda and was able to take her online high school coursework with her. Because of internet and power issues in her Kampala, Uganda, neighborhood, Lynsey often works during the evening and into the night in order to access her courses and participate in course live, web-conferencing sessions held in other time zones.
Lynsey has taken English, French, Marine Science, Geometry and World Cultures online high school coursesthis year. Her World Cultures and Geography course is a 10th grade, modern word history course where students read from the British Broadcasting Corporation website daily and discuss global events by geographical regions. Lynsey mentions, “Before I took the World Cultures course, I did not know the geography or countries of the African continent well. Now I know that information and about the AIDS epidemic in South Africa and how colonialism impacted countries here.” Lynsey also appreciates that teachers encourage students to take responsibility for their own work. She says that she enjoys how her teachers reach out to her, care and say, “Doing well is entirely up to you.”
Lynsey was born in Kenya and moved to Rwanda in 2009. She has 2 sisters and a brother who are homeschooled. She has many interests including the arts, fashion, music, and acting. Lynsey speaks English, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, and now she is learning French. She has enjoyed Skype chatting with Oaks Christian Online High School students and teachers in the United States and around the world this past year and now looks forward to participating in all the Oaks Christian main campus has to offer in the coming year.
