OCO Launches Original Online Computer Courses to Prepare Students for Technology Careers and Success in the AP Computer Science Course
Sandra Ruiz, MA in Computer Science, has written Introduction to Computer Languages and Java Programming classes for Oaks Christian Online students.
Westlake Village, CA – October 1, 2015
Oaks Christian Online (OCO) Subject Matter Expert Sandra Ruiz has written an online Introduction to Computer Languages course that will launch in January of 2016. Ms. Ruiz has both a BA and an MA in Computer Science and worked at Raytheon as a Software Engineer for 9 years. Ms. Ruiz has also taught both main campus and online courses at the collegiate level before coming to Oaks Christian as a course writer. “I applied to Oaks Christian Online as a teacher, but I found the course writing very interesting,” she says, “Now I love it. There is a lot of support for both the course writers and the teachers.”
Ms. Ruiz created a computer languages course where students can “meet” many different programming languages with an expert guiding them through 2 week modules and showing them how to apply the different languages. In this one semester course, students use individual chapters of current books and many free resources and tutorials that are widely available online. These are often core resources for collegiate classes, and even when the class is completed, students will have access to these sites for further exploration. Ms. Ruiz is also writing a Java programming course to be available for summer of 2016. This is a very hands-on course that, in concert with the Introduction to Computer Languages course, provides a firm foundation for approaching the AP Computer Science course offered online through OCO. This Java course offers a deeper understanding of what students were introduced to in the computer languages course, and also has been aligned with the AP Computer science curriculum to make the job of learning the language in that rigorous course much easier. Sandra says, “Students interested in taking AP Computer Science next fall can sign up now for Intro to Computer Languages this spring and take Java in the summer; they will be much better prepared for the Advanced Placement class next fall.”
Sandra has also found support in creating a theologically engaged computer science course for a Christian school. She says, “I really like the style of writing at OCO. There isn’t a lot of theory in such technical classes, but there are ethical issues. Programmers have to do things right and use their programming to help others.”
