OCO Ballerina to Dance Three Parts in December Nutcracker
Oaks Christian Online High School (OCO) sophomore Kyra Shimogori will dance three roles, Lady Licorice (a soloist performance), Friends of Clara and Snow, in the December 20th and 21st performance of the Nutcracker at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks, CA.
This is Kyra’s second Nutcracker season, and she will dance four performances over the December weekend. The opulent show, in its 20th annual appearance at the Arts Plaza’s Fred Kavli Theater, will feature Tiler Peck and Gonzalo Garcia from the New York City Ballet, Kalinin Russian Dance Troupe and more than 200 performers. Kyra dances for Pacific Festival Ballet (PFB) out of Agoura Hills, CA. PFB is the resident ballet company of The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Kyra enjoys not only the high caliber of the dancers at this large venue but also that many local schools organize field trips to the events for students who would not otherwise be exposed to dance. She hopes to inspire these students with an interest in the arts.
Kyra has been dancing since the age of three and is not new to being in the spotlight. This spring she will dance in Cinderella for PFB and will have the opportunity to compete in the Youth American Grand Prix in Huntington Beach, CA. The Grand Prix is the world’s largest dance network and holds events over 15 U.S. cities and 5 international locations, culminating in a week-long New York City final. Kyra will also audition for placement in summer ballet camps. She has traveled to Houston and Boston camps over the previous two summers.
Kyra’s drive and discipline also are evident in her passion for school. She attends Oaks Christian Online to help with the stress of having a full, traditional school day in addition to her practice schedule. When asked about the ability to balance both ballet and her online college prep studies she says, “It [OCO] really gives me the time and flexibility to pursue my passions. Oaks Christian online high school does take a lot of discipline, where you manage your own time, and it’s your responsibility to stay on pace; but overall it is far less stress, and I can really enjoy school. One of the best parts about OCO are the great online teachers. They take the time to respond to you quickly and explain things really well.”
Kyra also enjoys both modern and contemporary dance, and she feels that this will help her in the future as many companies look for a well-rounded dancer. After finishing Oaks Christian online high school, her hope is to attend a college with an excellent dance program, such as Indiana University, University of Utah or The Juilliard School. She is also interested in engineering or nursing and hopes to attend a top-rated university that will allow her to create a practical life after dance. In the meantime, Kyra dreams of earning the opportunity to dance for The Royal Ballet or the New York City Ballet. Kyra says, “Dance lets me express myself in a beautiful art form; I love the music and history of ballet. It allows for me to have great discipline that spills over to other areas of my life.”
