Megan McClain shows her Paint horse, travels to competitions and keeps up with college-preparatory school work.
Westlake Village, CA – August 25, 2015
Oaks Christian Online High School junior, Megan McClain, travels the country showing and competing with Paint horses. The American Paint Horse Association and the Pinto Horse Association of America together boast over a million registered horses and hold annual junior events for showing and competing. Megan and her horses show in both English and Western in the all-around events. While Megan competes with the top 20 in the nation and has earned multiple world and congress titles and championships, she hopes to be the number 1 youth in the country before her career is up. She has qualified for the Pinto World and Paint World Shows each year and has been one point away from the World Championship winner in the past. These shows offer a dizzying array of awards, including buckles, saddles, scholarships and more depending on the title that is being competed for.
Megan recently moved from Colorado to Ohio but regularly travels to her trainer in Louisiana and to shows all over the country. Her training and travel schedule makes completing high-level course work in a classroom difficult. Megan transferred to Oaks Christian Online High School during her sophomore year. “Oaks Christian Online School students and staff were really welcoming,” she says, “The love of Christ is in everything they do.” Megan considers her work with horse shows as a mission field and states, “It can be tough to defend your faith out in the world. The competitive nature of world shows can make it hard to balance, but I enjoy sharing who I am there.”
Megan is also a top student who is concerned with the quality of her learning. She has recently taken online courses in Pre-calculus, Chemistry, Advanced placement English Language and Composition and Advanced Placement US History. “I hope to attend an Ivy League college or perhaps TCU; I love Texas.” While there are many college riding programs, she finds that they often don’t let riders use their own horse, and that impacts the experience for her. She does say that the Oaks Christian Online School college counseling program influenced her vision for a college major, “The counselor, Mrs. Locke, encouraged me to think about pre-law or law and business with an international travel focus, because I am good with words.” As a true champion, Megan works for every grade point just as she works for national awards.
